Downtown Salem in 1980: Lecture with Jim McAllister
May 2 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
One event on an unspecified date at 7:30pm
Jim’s heavily – illustrated “armchair tour” will serve as the ultimate trip down memory lane for some, and an introduction to a Salem that once was for others. By 1980, the physical restoration of many of the buildings in the Salem Redevelopment Authority’s Heritage Plaza East area had been completed, as had most of the related urban landscaping. Businesses were opening and closing at a dizzying rate, newly-created apartments and condos were filling, and the Salem downtown was still trying to find its identity. Jim’s “snapshot” of the area, and era, will include more than 100 images, many of them depicting businesses (remember L.H. Rogers, Colonial Mens Shop, and As You Like It ?), people and even events that have passed from the scene.
