Salem is “Looking Up”! Enjoy a community public art display of over twenty whimsically decorated ship’s figureheads adorning downtown Salem through a self-guided tour brochure available at the NPS Visitor Center in Salem. “The Lady of Salem”, a unique, public maritime-arts festival in downtown Salem, spearheaded by the Salem Beautification Committee, hails the city’s resurgence as New England’s original Port of Culture. This nautical influenced street-art collaboration celebrates Salem’s rich maritime history, showcases local artists, promotes downtown businesses and beautifies the city. The project “Lady” is an interpretation of a historic figurehead, “The Jenny Lind,” carved for the clipper ship Nightingale. The Lady of Salem Public Maritime-Arts Festival seeks to embody Salem pride in maritime history and embark on a visually imaginative journey of creative figurehead interpretation.
AHOY! Self-guided tour cards for The Lady of Salem Public Art exhibit are available at the NPS Visitor Center in Salem, opposite the PEM. Put on your walking shoes and “look up and around! “Lady of Salem” coloring pages, a Scavenger hunt and other family fun games will be available at the Visitor Center on a first come, first serve basis.
