Calling all toddlers, tots, and preschoolers ages 2-6! The rangers at Salem Maritime National Historic Site invite you to attend free monthly storytime and activity sessions around the park! Bring your favorite adults and learn about the special places, objects, living things, and stories the National Park Service protects. Create crafts to take home each time and receive a special prize for attending all six sessions! No reservations required. Meet at Waite and Peirce (193 Derby Street), our park store. See complete schedule below:
June 5: Receive a Junior Ranger hat and badge and learn about the special places our park protects. Visit the golden eagle at the Custom House, then design your own park Arrowhead to show what you most about. (Book: Hello National Parks by Martha Zschock).
July 3: Create your own woodblock boat to sail in our pool-sized model of the harbor! Then walk out onto Derby Wharf to see a real lighthouse. (Book: A Lighthouse Saves the Day by Robert Lieber).
July 31: Learn about the animals that live in our ocean by creating a fish print and meeting some live creatures from Salem Sound Coastwatch. (Book: Goodnight Ocean by Mark Jasper).
August 28: Discover what kinds of goods come to us on a ship. Handle trade goods from around the world, including a giraffe mask from Africa! Then make your own animal mask. (Book: Around the World We Go by Margaret Wise Brown).
September 25: Dig up objects that tell us about Salem’s history in our archaeology box. Draw a picture of your findings to go in our museum case. Then, go see real artifacts at the Narbonne House. (Book: Archaeologists Dig for Clues by Kate Duke).
October 16: Learn what it was like to live at sea! Explore sailors’ sea chests and make your own pennant flag. (Book: The Merry Shipwreck by George Duplaix).
