Slavery and Abolition in Salem

September 16 @ 10:00 am - 10:45 am

Though slavery in Salem was never as widespread as the south, slave labor played a vital role in Salem’s Maritime economy before and even after Massachusetts abolished slavery in 1783. Join us for a special program to discuss the history and nature of slavery and abolition in Massachusetts and learn how these changes were experienced by Sabe and Rose Derby, an enslaved man, and woman of the Derby family.
