A morning of movement, music, crafts, story time, and Junior Ranger activities lead by variety of community partners. Take part in our free activities that are creative and educational to celebrate Brain Building in Progress Week (BBIP). The family event ends with the swearing in of all our new Junior Rangers! February Vacation at the Gables: Constructing History

Put your thinking cap on during February Vacation week and explore how people built houses in Colonial Massachusetts. What worked best?  What failed? How did they learn from their mistakes?

In this hands-on activity, kids will:

  • Learn about the tools of the trade and which materials they used most.
  • Experiment with different construction techniques at each of our workshop stations using popular building toys.
  • Fold and decorate your own paper house to take home.

Join us daily at 11:30 & 1:30 for Why Do We Have Gables? to explore which parts of historic buildings are the strongest.  Kids will be making shapes with their hands and bodies in this fun, interactive program.

April Vacation: Living History Lab at the Gables

Try your hand at history! The Living History Lab hands-on history program at The House of the Seven Gables allows the young and young-at-heart to learn about history through a unique set of experiments.

Living History Labs take place daily through April Vacation week. Activities and location vary daily. This is included with your regular admission to The Gables. Click here for rates, hours, and information.

This April Vacation event will also include and lesson about our local oceans with Greater Atlantic Region Fisheries educators from Gloucester.

LEGO Lighthouse “Make & Take”

Calling all LEGO lovers! Join us on Wednesday, April 18th during School April Vacation week for an exciting LEGO Lighthouse “Make & Take” event co-hosted by Essex Heritage and the National Park Service! Gavin Gardner, our special NPS instructor and local LEGO expert, is leading this family friendly activity where guests (ages 5+) will have the chance to make and take home their very own “mini” Derby Wharf Lighthouse. Guests are invited to come by any time between 10AM-12PM to build their lighthouse and only those who wish to “make & take” are required to register. We will also be providing instructions on how to build other beloved Salem lighthouses, including Bakers Island Lighthouse and Fort Pickering Lighthouse. Come celebrate the maritime heritage of Salem through the art of LEGO building!

Registration costs are only $5 per “mini” Derby Wharf Lighthouse.

*Supplies are limited, pre-registration is strongly suggested.

Families with children from birth to age 8 are welcome to take part in our free activities that are creative and educational to celebrate Brain Building in Progress Week (BBIP). The family event ends with the swearing in of all our new Junior Rangers!

This event is free and open to families with children from birth to age 8. All activities take place indoors on the second floor of St. Joseph Hall, 160 Derby Street in Salem.

Family Yoga Workshop

Peabody Essex Museum

In our fast-paced and “plugged in” world, today’s youth are struggling to navigate emotional, mental and physical stress more than ever. Amanda Given, founder of Govinda Yoga Play, takes a playful approach to helping children improve their inner resilience, emotional balance and attention through yoga and mindfulness. Join this fun, safe and engaging workshop that combines creative, free-flow style yoga and meditation and incorporates play, music, story and simple props. No skills required. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one; some will be available.
